Mary is a new media player from X-Industries. It is a notable improvement over Cerise, which had a somewhat clunky UI/UX and a quick-and-dirty approach to installation.
Mary is smaller, simpler, and has a better UI, while still being based upon the same GStreamer framework.
What’s missing?
As of now, there are only two features which Cerise had, but Mary does not:
- Remote URL playback
- Support for YouTube, Vimeo, Twitch, etc.
These should, however, be implemented in due course.
What’s different?
- The controls are now separate from the playback window
- The playback window only appears when playing a video, saving room on the screen
- The controls are simpler
Why is it called “Mary”?
First of all, Mary was one of the few package names not already in use (according to pkgs.org). However, the main reason it’s called “Mary” is because I named it after my grandmother, who (like this software) is good with music.
